Betta Basics Support

Q: I have had a Siamese fighting fish in a five litre tank for the last two weeks. At about five days, the water begins to become cloudy. How often should I change the entire water? If Betta Basics is put in the tank inbetween entire water changes, will this clear the water? If this is the case, how much should I put in and can I put in in there with the fish in the tank? Is it possible to purchase Betta Basics in larger quantities than the 60ml bottle?
A:I generally change my Betta Water about twice a week. Betta Basics will not clear the water and I wouldn't recommend a clarifier to you because of no mechanical filtration. The problem is in a Betta environment the organics tend to build fairly quickly with no filtration. You may want to reduce feedings to at least once a day, no more food than your betta can consume in a few minutes. Regarding a larger size, a new 250 mL bottle si now available

Q: I have a betta who has lived over a year in a jar with a plant, and attribute his good fortune to your Betta Basics. However, I just went to get a new bottle and instead of the directions saying 1/2 cap for 1 gallon of water, the new one says one capful for a quart of water Why the change?
A: The formulation of this product is still the same. But since we released this product we have continued to do long term testing at various dosing levels. We found basically that while the original dosing is certainly adequate, it was probably a bit too much on the conservatives side... and that coupled with customer feedback indicating that higher dosing was not only safe but very effective at maintaining pH as well we felt it would be to the customer's benefit to increase the recommended dosing. Keep in mind of course that this is what we recommend as safe and effective for the majority
of betta bowl environments, but that doesn't mean one cannot use less or more if they desire.

Q: After I clean out the fish bowl and add fresh water, including "Betta Basics, can I put the betta fish immediately in the fish bowl? Or do I let the bowl (with the fresh water and Betta Basics) sit for a while before I put the fish back in the bowl? Also, the Betta Basics instructions say that the product can be used 2-3 t imes per week. Can I put the Betta Basics in the bowl while the fish is in the bowl, or do I need to take the fish out before I add the Betta Basics?
A: It is fine to put the betta in the bowl immediately after using Betta Basics as long as the temperature is consistent. Betta Basics is fine to use in the bowl with the fish on a regular basis to maintain pH and water quality.

Q: My sister bought a betta in a little bowl. Is this the ideal tank for the fish, it's so small.
A: This environment is OK for betta fish. They come from areas in Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, etc.) that flood and drain leaving not much more than stagnant mud puddles. Bettas live in these mud puddles. When it floods again, betta fish are allowed to mingle and breed. They feed largely off of insect larvae in these mud puddles/wet areas.
