Hi,

If I am already using marine buffer, what additional supplements would you recommend to add for a reef system? As opposed to switching over to reef buffer.

Thanks

Perhaps the best thing you can do is start with is a good balanced salt mix. Reef Salt supplies the ideal range of calcium, magnesium, strontium, and iodide with the correct pH to maintain a reef system. Once you have a good balanced mix of salt water, you can check your parameters weekly or bi-weekly and best determine how you should supplement.

Reef Builder will raise KH and not pH when pH is of no concern(Marine Buffer will also have some effect on alkalinity.)
We have a few calcium products: Reef Complete (liquid) and Reef Advantage Calcium (powder) will help to raise calcium to your desired level while adding some magnesium and strontium to maintain those levels. You can choose one or the other or these, depending on your preference between liquid and powdered products. Reef Calcium is an organic source of calcium. It is easily metabolized by corals and can be used to maintain calcium levels once they have been achieved.

Reef Advantage Magnesium will supply magnesium in a form that does not release ammonia into tanks as other magnesium supplements tend to do. It can be mixed in RO/DI water first or added directly to the tank.

There are other supplements to help with coral growth. Reef Plus supplies amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to corals, which can be important when using RO water. Reef Trace adds trace minerals. Trace minerals fall out of solution fairly quickly and are not found in RO water, so adding trace minerals is a good idea. Reef Iodide supplies an iodide solution rather than an iodine solution, as iodide is much safer to dose than iodine.

Reef Advantage Strontium and Reef Strontium are two strontium supplements. Reef Strontium is an organic source of strontium, which like the calcium is easily metabolized by corals. Reef Advantage Strontium is ionic strontium and will quickly and safely raise strontium levels.
