hi guys
need some help on the dpletion levels of iodide.
i have been using seachem iodide for my mixed reef and was hoping you could tell me
what would be safe dose to use in mls, for 170 ltr volume tank that is heavilly stocked
with sps lps and softies? i dont want to have to go and buy a test kit and it says on the bottle
to use every other day ?
i do about a 30 % water change on my tank about once a month.
my parameters are 0.03 - 0.10 on hanna po4 test egg
non detectable nitrate
dkh 8-9
is there any negative effects to look out for that might suggest over dosing iodide?
cheers

To be honest, you can safely dose the Reef Iodide as instructed without overdosing. Our Reef Iodide is a very safe, stabilized form of potassium iodide and will not convert into toxic iodine under aquarium conditions. It is also in a form that is readily available to the corals, thus gets utilized very quickly. With that being said, it is always a good idea to be able to test the level periodically, especially if you are only doing monthly water changes. That is really the only way to know if it is beginning to build up. A safe iodide level is anywhere between 0.06-0.08 ppm. If you notice any negative reactions in your corals (necrosis, tissue loss, loose tissue, etc), you may consider checking your level, as this may be indicative of a build-up of iodide. I hope this helps!

thanx for the reply.
so then if my aquarium is heavily stocked would it be safe to say my iodide is depleting rapidly?
cheers

You are very welcome!
Yes, I would say that since your tank is heavily stocked, the recommended dose of Reef Iodide is being depleted quickly.

thanx again!
ok so can you please also tell me if seachem iodide is the same as potassium chloride?
can they be dosed together?
if not how are they different? and do you sell potassium chloride or an equivalent?
what proven effective products can you recommend to assist in sps color enhancement?
cheers, Vlad

Seachem's Reef Iodide is potassium iodide designed to increase iodide. It will not boost your potassium significantly. If you are wishing to raise potassium, potassium chloride is a good choice but you will want to be careful not to overuse it. As with iodide, it is important to test this element regularly when it is being dosed to ensure you do not cause harm to the aquarium inhabitants. We have done several studies on potassium in the reef aquarium and have found that it takes a very long time to deplete it and supplementation should not be necessary. Most salts will have sufficient potassium in them and the corals will not deplete this level for quite a while, 90% of people would do several water changes in the amount of time that it would take for potassium to be affected and this would replace any trace amounts that had been utilized.
