New 50 gal. African tank

Thanks for the great tech support on the phone yesterday. I am on day 12 with the new tank started with Stability. Still NO amonia, nitrites or nitrates. My five Africans are thriving and the water is clear and polished. Saturday if all is the same I will purchase and add a few more. If this is normal then your product is wonderful. My 40 gallon I started a year ago from scratch took at least 3 weeks to add "good" fish to and that was a little early. A few didn't make it due to my impatience.
Thanks!
Eric

Re: New 50 gal. African tank

I am showing a rise in amonia this morning, 0.25 ppm. I was going to purchase and add new cichlids today, but am skeptical as to wether this is a good idea or not. I dosed with Prime and replaced one pair of filter bags and the charcol prior to adding the prime. As long as the amonia levels do not increase I am assuming the Prime will detoxify the Amonia? I have stopped using the stability per the start up directions. This is week 3 after start up and this is the first rise I have seen in any levels, even Nitrates have been 0 ppm. I will probably add a few more fish and move them if levels skyrocket.
Have a great weekend!
Eric

Re: New 50 gal. African tank

Thanks for the update!

Yes, that is correct. Prime will detoxify the ammonia for 24-48 hours, while your biological filter consumes it. Is this the first time you have seen any sign of ammonia? Also, what type of biological filter media do you have in place? When housing cichlids, it is very important to have a larger biological filter, as they tend to be a bit more messy than most other freshwater fish. Since you have seen a rise in ammonia, I would recommend adding more Stability, maybe for another 7 days. Keep in mind that you cannot really overdose the Stability. You are simply adding "good" bacteria to your filter, which will assist in removing the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. You can certainly add more fish, as long as you are adding Stability and Prime, but if it were me, I would hold off on adding any more fish until I see where the cycle goes. :)
