Seachem Denitrate

I am awaiting my purchase of 4 liters of Denitrate to be used on a 40 gal breeder with a 30 gal sump.
I am planning on putting the media in a 4 inch PVC pipe with internal stops on each end drilled with small holes to allow a full flow, with a cap on each end. On the entrance I will make a 1 foot section of 1 1/2 PVC filled with floss for a prefilter and capped. joining the two with 3/4 inch PVC. My question is should I elevate the exit and put the drain hole on the top of the cap to allow any gas that may accumulate or should I just center it? and perhaps angle the whole pipe upwards slightly to the exit. One more, with the recommendations of adding stability regularly it kind of sounds like this material needs to have a food source of some kind. Would adding a very small amount of Bio-Pellets after the prefilter accomplish anything? And should the exit from the tube be directed into the skimmer?

Thanks

Re: Seachem Denitrate

Hey Freddy, thanks for the post.

Should be little to no gas build up in your reactor but it will not hurt to put the drain toward the top or angle the reactor to allow any gas to escape. Typically the gas will be dissolved in the water and will not build up in the reactor though.

De*Nitrate does not require feeding and will be effective without the use of Stability. However, Stability contains bacteria species that will colonize De*Nitrate and consume your nitrates. Using Stability will help establish the appropriate bacteria quickly and speed up the cycling time for the media. Without Stability, it may take a little longer for the media to become effective.

While not necessary, directing the outlet to your skimmer will help to remove compounds that were not removed by the bacteria and but again, this is not necessary.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
