matrix carbon

I just received 1liter of seachem matrix carbon and the size of the spheres are from 3mm to 6mm and it is not even perfect spheres. The previous liter I had was just around 0.5 to 1mm in size and they were all perfect spheres.

Is the carbon still effective at this size? IMO it is too big. Is this normal size for the matrix carbon and is it because this was from just a different lot? I don't feel ok about using this sized matrix carbon in my aquarium.

Re: matrix carbon

The beads use to be 2.3 mm. We attempted to make them a little bit larger and mistakenly ended up with 8 mm beads. We are almost out of those and when those are gone we will have beads that are 3-4 mm, our original goal. There is no adverse effects on its performance. It is the same macro-porous carbon that you are use to. It will just fit into some filters better.
