Phosphate-based buffers and planted tanks

Hi there

What is the underlying cause that makes Phosphate-based buffers (such as Discus Buffer and Neutral Regulator) unsuitable for planted aquariums?

I would like to use these products together (to set a pH of 6.6) in my aquarium which is only slightly planted (mainly silk plants with some live watersprite and anubias nana) with low light. Will I experience algae-blooms in this set up?

Cheers

Re: Phosphate-based buffers and planted tanks

Discus Buffer and Neutral Regulator are not recommended b/c both contain phosphate . Phosphate can promote unwanted algae growth. If you are looking to maintain a pH of 6.6, you could try Acid Buffer http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/AcidBuffer.html and Alkaline Buffer http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/AlkalineBuffer.html. Both come in a liquid and dry version. Neither of these buffers contain phosphate and should help you obtain the desired pH 6.6 used accordingly.
