Purigen Placement in Canister Filter

It is 10:38 EST Sunday 2/6/2011 and I cannot get the site "search" to function. Maybe it is being blocked by the Super Bowl???

Anyway, I have been running a Fluval 305 in my planted 75 Gallon FW tank for many years and in the upper dual compartments, I have a bag of Purigen in each. So it seems to me that all the water passing through the filter has to flow over or through the purigen. I have regenerated these in the past and renewed in the past. My question is " Do I need two bags in the filter like I have been running, or will just one of them suffice and eventually filter the tank water?". There is no question in my mind that the Purigen is working. I can see that the water is clearer, especially after regeneration or replacement. It is just my question of needing one or both sides of the uppermost filter basket.

Thanks for your assistance.

Howard

Re: Purigen Placement in Canister Filter

I'm sorry that the search function was not working properly. I will let our IT department know about this, so that they can address the issue. Thank you for letting us know.

It is completely up to you, whether you want to use 1 bag of Purigen vs 2 bags. 1 bag is plenty enough for the size of your aquarium, however, I prefer to use 2 bags in the baskets within canister filters. That way, the water is not able to flow around the 1 bag, instead it is flowing through both bags and more water is coming into contact with the absorptive sites on the media.

I hope this helps!

Re: Purigen Placement in Canister Filter

Thank you very much for your reply. You have answered my question and I agree that it would make sense to cause all the waterflow to pass through the two bags of Purigen. Thaks again and best regards,

Howard
