Seachem purigen

I was wondering how long is a bottle of purigen good for. I bought mine Dec/2009.

How much would I need for a 40 gal. I need to remove organics from my water. thanks

Will purigen help remove brown diatoms?

Re: Seachem purigen

Hi fantails. Thank you for your post!

Purigen does not expire. Therefore, your Purigen from 2008 will be just as effective. You should only need 40mL of Purigen for your 40 gallon tank. Some hobbyists choose to use twice the recommended amount, which will allow for an extended period of time between regenerations.

Purigen could certainly help with diatom algae, since Purigen removes waste before it converts to nitrates. This will keep your nitrate level from increasing further, leaving less food for the algae to utilize to grow. You might also want to check phosphates, as diatom algae is usually an indicator that nitrate and phosphate are both elevated.

Let us know if we can help further!

Re: Seachem purigen

What media bags would I use for this purigen? I have HBH media bags and aqua clear media bags and the purigen falls through the holes. These bags are fine mesh.

Can I use panty hose or nylons to hold the media?

Re: Seachem purigen

Hi fantails,

Because of the very small bead size of Purigen, it requires a media bag of 180 microns; nylons or panty hose will unfortunately not work. I would recommend The Bag; here is a link to it:

Have a good day.

Re: Seachem purigen

I saw the bag. Do you have anything smaller than 5X10 or can I cut the bag to fit? Thanks

You can certainly cut it to fit, no problem. Also, most our our medias come pre-bagged in a 100mL size pouch.

Re: Seachem purigen

I have one more question on this subject. The pre bagged purigen is the bag sealled so that it can't be opened or do they use the tie to seal it? I want to use it in a 40 gallon with an aqua Clear 50 pump.

Re: Seachem purigen

The 100mL pre-bagged filter medias are sealed and cannot be opened. They are ready to use as soon as you open the box. Simply give the media a quick rinse with tap water and place in your filter.
