Purigen

If Seachem wanted to assure aquarists that Purigen is safe to use with product X, so that more people will use Purigen making Seachem lots of $; it should release a list of products that you should not use with Purigen and a list of products that you can use with Purigen. Why leave the consumer in the dark, with lame answers like - "Regenerate Purigen? Duh we don't know what is or isn't safe with our product Purigen, just so it doesn't have any amine based polymer in it then it is okay, we think, um yeah? Err use Prime, yeah we make that, it is safe." Well lots of us use several other water treatments and medications and we really need to know what we can and can't do with Purigen, so we don't go and destroy its properties. I am not asking Seachem to make a list that is absolutely accurate, since other product formulas can change - so Seachem should state to the best of their knowledge that product X is or isn't compatible with Purigen. We are hobbyists, not chemists, it is the responsibility of Seachem to tell their end-users what products are good or not good to use with Purigen. Providing this information will only boost sales of Purigen, so why Seachem would play dumb is really odd when it is they that have the most to gain by providing such information.

Re: Purigen

Unfortunately, due to the abuse of the legal system in today's society, we do not mke comments about other manufacturers' products. We regularly change formulations of our products as the need arises, as do other manufacturers, so we are not able to make claims as to the composition of a product whose formulation may change tomorrow. For that reason, we can tell you conclusively that Prime is perfectly safe for regenerating Purigen, and ChlorGuard is perfectly safe for regenerating Purigen. If you are using another product to regenerate Purigen, you should contact the manufacturer of that product to determine whether it is amine-based or not.

Note that it is only the regeneration process which requires this knowledge. Use of amine-based products in your aquarium while using Purigen is perfectly acceptable, as the concecntration is low enough as to have minimal effect on the efficacy of Purigen.

Re: Purigen

Geminate, you can always go to the website of the other manufacturer and ask them if their product is an amine based polymer.

Also, depending on your tone of voice in your posting and the approach that you take; I have found Seachem to be very straightforward in the past.

I have found them easy to understand and if you DO want them to give you the chemical details, most of the time they will give you quite a bit.

I have found that the information that I have received from Seachem has been much more accurate, predictable and reliable than most information that I have ever gotten from a local fish store. Unless that is, if you are talking to the owner of the store and if they have a background in chemistry, biology, natural sciences, etc and if they think you have a clue of what you are talking about.

Unfortunately, but going into your local fish store is like taking your car to the local auto shop - you have to know just enough to tell if you are being snowed or if you are getting good information.

I personally like a company that shoots straight and lets me know what products I need, which products I DO NOT NEED and how to find out more information.

Let us all know what information you are able to find out from the other manufacturer's website about their product. It would be good for us all to know.
